Newman Falls To ESU In Final Nonconference Match

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Newman volleyball team took to the road for its final nonconference match this evening against MIAA opponent Emporia State, dropping the match 3-0.
 
KEY SEQUENCE
 
After being down 13-9 in the third set, the Jets (15-8, 4-3 Heartland) climbed back into the set to tie things up at 18-18, 19-19, 20-20 and 22-22 but couldn't capture the lead from the Hornets (11-12, 3-7 MIAA) late in the third and final set of the evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1
 
-Newman would get its only lead of Set 1 from an Aliya Higginbotham ace early in the set to make the score 2-1.
 
-The Jets would tie the score at 8-8 after trailing 8-5, by getting three straight points by way of a Hailey Braddy kill, a Jarin Braithwait ace and an error by Emporia State.
 
-The Jets would trail 17-14 in Set 1 but that's the closest they would get to tying the score, eventually falling in Set 1 25-16.  
 
Set 2
 
-The Hornets would score the first-four points of the set but the Jets would rally back to tie things up at 4-4 and eventually take the lead at 6-5 early on with a kill from Alexis Roecker.
 
-Emporia State would go on a six-point run to take an 11-6 lead but three straight points from Newman would bring the score to 11-9, which is the closest the Jets would get to tying the score in Set 2.
 
-The Jets dropped Set 2 25-18 but was led by Emily Harvey in Set 2 with five kills.
 
Set 3
 
-Newman scored the first-four points of Set 3 by way of a Harvey kill, a Higginbotham ace and back-to-back Turner kills to get out to an early 4-0 lead.
 
-The Hornets swarmed their way back into the set by getting out to a 13-9 lead a little over halfway through the set. Newman would score three straight points to put the score at 13-12.
 
-A kill from Higginbotham would tie things up at 18-18 for the first time since the score was at 8-8. An attack error from an Emporia State player would draw things even at 19-19 and a Harvey kill would tie the score back up at 20-20 late in the set.
-The Jets would tie things up for the last time at 22-22 on an error from Emporia State but couldn't break through to capture the lead to extend the match and fell 25-22 to the Hornets in the final set.

The Jets head back home for another weekend of conference play, beginning Thursday against Lubbock Christian.
