WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman women's soccer team was back home to start its two week homestand to close out the regular season this evening, but fell short late in a competitive 2-1 match to St. Mary's.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (4-6-5, 3-5-3 Heartland) and the Rattlers (8-3-3, 5-2-3 Heartland) were locked at 1-1 with a minute to play in regulation. St. Mary's would slither its way out of the draw by getting a late goal off of a rebounded shot that was saved in the 89' minute to win 2-1.

Rosa Urista-Chico. Drive from right side, pass into box to the left side, shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
37'-STMU-Leah Whitaker, unassisted. Chip from wide left side over the goalkeeper's head into the top right corner of the net.
89'-STMU-Alexia Maldonado, unassisted. Found the ball off of a rebounded shot that was saved, shot past the goalie into the middle of the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Jets weren't afraid to take shots early, taking five shots in the first 13 minutes of the match, meanwhile St. Mary's didn't get a single shot during that time.
-
Ashley Sweetnam would record her first of four saves of the match in the 23' minute.
-Newman would get on the board first when Urista-Chico passed the ball from the right side of the box to a wide open Foster on the left side of the box for a shot past the goalie into the bottom right corner of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the 25' minute.
-St. Mary's would tie the score at 1-1 in the 37' minute and the score would remain that way heading into halftime.
-A shot from Urista-Chico in the 58' minute came up just a bit wide of the net, which could have broken the tie at that point in the match.
-Newman would fire off six shots in the second half of the match to the Rattlers three.
-In the 89' minute the Rattlers would end up escaping with a 2-1 victory off of rebounded shot that was saved and then put into the net in the dwindling minute of regulation.
NOTES
- The loss was just the third time in 15 games this season that the Jets have allowed multiple goals to the opponent.
-Foster's early score was her fourth goal of the season, which pushes her into the lead on the season for the Jets.
