Jets Claim Five-Set Thriller Over Dallas Baptist

DALLAS — In a thrilling back-and-forth match, the Newman women's volleyball team claimed a 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-9) victory over Dallas Baptist in Heartland Conference action Thursday night.

KEY SEQUENCE

After suffering a tough loss in the fourth set, the Jets (17-9, 6-4 Heartland) were in a tight fifth game with the Patriots (7-17, 4-6 Heartland) until rattling off a 6-1 run to take control. Hailey Braddy put up three kills during the run, while Yemima Buana added a block to take the Jets from a 4-4 tie to a commanding 10-5 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1

-Trailing early, a pair of kills from Braddy and one from Turner helped key a 4-2 run to tie it at 5-5, but a lengthy run by DBU staked it out to a 17-11 advantage.

-Emily Harvey took over from there, turning in three kills and a block to get it to 19-17, but the Patriots again pulled away for a four-point lead at 22-18.

-Newman turned it right back around though, scoring eight of the next 10 points to grab the comeback win. Harvey had a pair of kills during that stretch, and back-to-back finishes from Turner and Aliya Higginbotham capped off the comeback.

Set 2

-A Jarin Braithwait block and two Turner kills early staked the Jets to a 6-5 lead early, but the hosts turned that around to a 16-11 lead.

-A 5-1 run from Newman thanks to kills from Brook Conley, Turner and Higginbotham got the guests right back in it at 17-16, and a Conley ace followed by a Harvey kill tied it at 20-20 before a DBU run ended the set to tie things up.

Set 3

-Two kills out of Turner got the Jets out to a quick start in the third, and a three-point spurt with another Conley ace and a block out of Braddy made it 6-4.

-Another run, this one 7-2, extended that Newman lead to 15-10, with Briathwait putting up two kills, Buana adding another and Braddy sticking back a block to set the Jets up with a healthy lead.

-DBU ended up climbing back in it to get as close as 20-19, but two Patriot errors around an ace from Braithwait and kills from Conley and Higginbotham closed out the win.

Set 4

-A three-point run early put the Jets up 3-2 in the fourth. A 5-1 jaunt with two Harvey kills and an ace from Burton stretched that advantage to 9-6, although DBU would put up a big run of its own to take over.

-A kill from Alexis Roecker followed by two Patriot errors started pulling Newman back into it, but the hosts finished off the set to force a deciding fifth game.

Set 5

-Two Turner kills and a pair of DBU errors made it 4-2 early in the decisive set.

-The Patriots tied it up before the Jets went on their all-important run to take control. After a brief comeback attempt by DBU, back-to-back kills from Turner brought it to match point, and Braithwait's kill finished it off.
