AUSTIN, Texas – The Newman volleyball team played its final regular season road conference match this afternoon, winning 3-1 over St. Edward's, splitting the two matches they played this season.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (18-9, 7-4 Heartland) came out and won the first-two sets of the afternoon but dropped the third set to the Hilltoppers (9-15, 7-4 Heartland). Newman would respond by dominating the fourth and final set of the day by having an impressive .333 hitting percentage during the final set to win by double digits over St. Edward's.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
-Newman would trail 13-11 a little over halfway through Set 1 but the Jets would go on a six-point run to take a 17-13 lead. Kills from
Kayla Turner,
Alexis Roecker and
Hailey Braddy, along with three Hilltopper errors made that Jet run.
-Newman and St. Edward's would go back and forth to finish out Set 1, the Jets would score four out of the last five points of the set, by way of an
Emily Harvey kill, back-to-back
Jarin Braithwait kills and a Turner kill to win the set 25-20.
Set 2
-The Jets trailed early on at 9-7 but a five-point run would put Newman out in front at 12-9. Two St. Edward's errors, kills from Braithwait and Roecker and an ace from Turner would make that Jet run.
-Newman would control the set throughout the set until the Hilltoppers rallied back to tie the score at 23-23 late in the set.
-St. Edward's had set points at 25-24 and 26-25 but the Jets overcame both of those attempts to tie the score up those two times. Newman would win Set 2 28-26 with back-to-back errors from the Hilltoppers, which secured a 2-0 advantage for the Jets heading into Set 3.
Set 3
-Harvey scored the first three points of the set for Newman, while Turner and Braithwait both added kills to give the Jets an early 5-4 lead.
-Newman would give up the lead to St. Edward's at 6-5 but fought back to tie things up at 12-12 from a Harvey kill.
-It would be all Hilltoppers after Newman tied the score at 12-12, the Jets would score its final point of the set at 22-15 by way of a St. Edward's error. The Hilltoppers would win Set 3 25-15 over Newman.
Set 4
-Newman would get the first point of the set from a
Yemima Buana kill to open things up. St. Edward's would control the early part of the set by getting out to a 7-4 lead.
-The Jets would rally back to retake the lead with a seven-point run of their own at 11-7. Kills from Harvey, Turner, Braithwait and
Brook Conley, along with three Hilltopper errors made that run.
-Newman would go on another run to extend its lead out to 18-9. Kills from Braithwait, Roecker and
Aliya Higginbotham, along with three St. Edward's errors completed that Jet run.
-The Jets finished Set 4 by getting back-to-back points from a Braithwait kill and a Turner ace to win the final set of the match 25-14.

-After this afternoon's match the Jets are in a tie for third place in the conference standings with St. Edward's.
-With today's win Newman is on a three-game conference winning streak.
-Turner was two digs away from having a triple-double. She finished with 11 kills, 12 assists and 8 digs.

The Jets head back home to begin their final two week homestand to end the regular season. Newman begins with Texas A&M International on Thursday and St. Mary's Saturday inside Fugate Gymnasium.
