CLAREMORE, Okla. — Grabbing an early goal and letting its defense ride out another shutout, the Newman women's soccer team started the second half of its Heartland Conference slate with a 2-0 victory over Rogers State Saturday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
While the Jets (4-4-4, 3-3-2, 11 pts Heartland) has played excellent defense all year, a two-goal lead is always nice. They got that against the Hillcats (5-6-1, 1-6-1, 4 pts Heartland) when Rosa Urista-Chico took control and nailed a shot from 25 yards out that beat the keeper to the upper 90.
SCORING PLAYS
8'-NU-Morgan Foster, assist Rosa Urista-Chico. Foster helped the Jets get started early by burying a shot in the right upper 90.
87'-NU-Urista-Chico, unassisted. Shot from 25 yards out into the upper corner.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-With not much but an offsides called against the Jets happened in the first seven minutes, but Foster changed all that with her score, and Urista-Chico nearly made it 2-0 with a shot that RSU keeper Tayler Stover needed to stop in the 10th minute.
-Newman continued to put the pressure on, getting two shots and two corners over a 90-second span in the 23rd and 24th minutes, and keeper Ashley Sweetnam picked up her second save of the half in the 30th.
-Another offensive flurry for the Jets came inside the 15-minute mark of the opening half, as Dania Rodriguez put up a shot in the 33rd minute, and Decker added two more that both needed saves out of Stover in the 36th and 37th.
-Two quick shots in the first few minutes of the second half were both on goal for the Jets, as Erin Mink and Decker got the Hillcats on their heels. Natalie Espino, Vanessa Ortiz and Katie Crouse all put shots on target as well in the final 15 minutes before Urista-Chico connected on the insurance goal.
NOTES
-The shutout was the eighth on the season for the Jets, who have allowed just seven goals in 12 games this season.
-Urista-Chico's late goal was a big one, and is the junior's first of the season. She leads Newman with 44 shots and 23 shots on goal this season.
