KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Newman men's basketball team traveled north for a nonconference game during thanksgiving break and held a lead throughout most of the second half but fell 69-66 to Rockhurst Saturday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (1-5) regained the lead after halftime with 18:34 remaining in the second half and would stretch their lead out to 10 points multiple times throughout the second half but the Hawks (3-2) would retake the lead with a pair of free throws to make it 63-62 with 4:11 remaining and held on to win by hitting key free throws down the stretch.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Taylor Schieber would score the first-two points of the game to give Newman an early 2-0 lead. A 3-pointer from
Kevin Bryant, along with a layup from
Daniel Green and two made free throws from Schieber would give the Jets a 9-4 lead with 17:08 in the first half.
-The Hawks would get their first lead of the game with 14:35 left in the first half but the Jets would fight back to retake the lead with 10:13 on the clock when
Pierre Hayden drove the lane and laid it off the glass to take a 16-15.

Daniel Nwosu, Jr. would go on a five-point run of his own by getting a layup and then hitting a 3-pointer to cut into the Rockhurst lead to make it 31-30 with 1:48 left in the first half of play. Green would hit two free throws to close out the first half to make it 34-32 in favor of the Hawks heading into halftime.
-Coming out of halftime Bryant would hit a free throw to make it 34-33 and on the next Jet possession Hayden would come down and hit a 3-pointer to give Newman a 36-34 lead with 18:34 remaining in the game.
-A steal from
Jacob Birnbaum would turn into a fastbreak opportunity for the Jets, which Nwosu capitalized on with a layup to extend the Newman lead out to 52-42 with 13:55 left in the game.
-The Hawks would creep back into the game and tie the score at 53-53 with 9:53 on the clock but the Jets would go on a 9-4 run with to make it 62-57 with 5:29 remaining in the game.
-Rockhurst would get its first lead of the second half with 4:11 left to make it 63-62 but Green would come back down on the other end of the court and hit a pair of free throws to give Newman a 64-63 lead with 3:58 left in the game.
-A jumper from Schieber would make the score 67-66 Rockhurst with 53 seconds remaining in the game but the Hawks would hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds left and hold onto win the game 69-66 over Newman.
