TOPEKA, Kan. — A fast start held up for much of the first half, but a powerful offense was too much for the Newman men's basketball team, which fell to No. 14 Wasbburn 103-74 Saturday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (1-6) never trailed the undefeated Ichabods (8-0) for the first 13 minutes of the game, but the hosts got hot late in the half, scoring the final 10 points of the period to earn a double-digit lead at the break.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman, which has shown promising signs in each of its first six games, started off the contest with four straight points out of Daniel Green, followed by a jumper by Taylor Schieber to take an early 6-0 lead in the first two minutes.
-Washburn's first field goal cut that lead to three, but a Daniel Nwosu 3-pointer on the next possession stretched it to six, and the Jet lead stayed at or above four for the next three-plus minutes. During that stretch, Pierre Hayden completed a three-point play then nailed a trey to give Newman its biggest lead of the game at 17-9.
-A three-point play from Green made it 22-15 with 13:02 to play in the half before a seven-point run by the Ichabods tied it up for the first time since it was scoreless. Schieber followed with a 3-pointer, and Hayden's jumper at the 10:41 mark once again made it a five-point game.
-The Jets maintained that lead for nearly five minutes, and even when Washburn took its first lead of the game, it stayed close until it went on its big run to end the half.
-A hot start to the second half — 4-for-5 from the field including three 3-pointers — for the Jets was topped by a perfect Ichabod run to maintain the lead, and the hosts steadily built that lead the rest of the way.
