ALVA, Okla. — Bouncing back from multiple double-digit deficits, the Newman men's basketball team tied things late, but fell to Northwestern Oklahoma State 72-64 Saturday night in nonconference action.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (1-7) ripped off an 11-0 run to tie things up in the final four minutes, eventually evening it up at 58-58 with 3:51 to play. The Rangers (3-5) responded with eight straight points over the next three minutes though, holding on for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-NWOSU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Christian DeYoung buried a 3-pointer to get the Jets on the board two minutes in.
-The hosts were able to build their lead out to 25-13 as the midway point of the first half ticked by, but Newman began to climb back in it from there. Back-to-back dunks from Jacob Birnbaum and Kevin Bryant got it back to single digits, and free throws by Allen Wilson and Daniel Nwosu made it 25-21 at the 7:08 mark.
-After the Rangers pushed it back out to a nine-point game, two baskets by Bryant around a Taylor Schieber trey within a span of 58 seconds made it 31-29. A jumper out of Birnbaum answered NWOSU's basket and the Jets entered the break down 33-31.
-Bryant netted a layup on the opening possession of the second half to tie things up for the first time. That was the only basket for Newman in the first four-plus minutes though, as the Rangers got back out in front by eight. Schieber followed with a basket and a four-point play after being fouled on a 3-pointer to cut it to 41-39.
-The Rangers answered with seven straight points from there, and the two sides went back and forth before the hosts went up 56-45 at the 7:42 mark. From there, the Jets rattled off 11 straight, all by Nwosu, including a 7-for-7 mark from the free throw line, tying it up at 56-all.
-Newman tied it again at 58-58 on a pair of Schieber freebies, but Northwestern Oklahoma responded with their run that helped seal the game.
