Jets Open With Exciting Win, Split Doubleheader

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Putting together some ninth-inning magic, the Newman baseball team opened its season with a victory on the road at Southwestern Oklahoma, ultimately splitting a doubleheader to kick off 2016 Friday afternoon.

The Jets (1-1) were able to take advantage of mistakes by the Bulldogs (2-4) in the final frame of Game 1, as they plated four runs with the help of four SWOSU errors after the first eight innings were scoreless, opening the season with a  4-0 win before falling 5-1 in the second game.

Lucas Schauer scattered four hits and four walks and got the help of a clean defense that committed no errors and ended both the seventh and eighth innings with double plays to keep the Bulldogs off the board. The junior recorded the nine-inning shutout to open the season.

Newman picked up three hits through the first eight innings, but pounced on their chance to take control in the ninth. Tyler Bugner led off with a walk and stole second, moving up to third on an Aaron Mack groundout. Garett Thomas reached on an error, Mitchell Beaudreau was hit by a pitch and a Brian Canfield chopper back to the pitcher was mishandled and allowed Bugner to come across with the first run of the Jets' season. Daniel Jahnke earned the only RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to double the lead, and back-to-back errors scored two more runs.

Schauer, who allowed runners but got out of jams most of the game, twirled a quick 1-2-3 inning to lock up the win.

In the nightcap, Mack recorded the first RBI base hit of the season in the first inning to score Jacob Hamerle, who led off with a walk. The Newman pitching staff's scoreless inning streak extended to 10 1/3 innings to open the year, but the Bulldogs pushed across three runs in the second inning to open up a lead.

The Jets got at least one runner on in each of the final three innings, including two on with one out in the top of the seventh, but couldn't climb back in it.

Bugner cracked two hits in the second game to go with a pair of walks in the first. Thomas and Canfield each pocketed a pair of hits on the day, while Hamerle drew three walks. Kane McCarthy got the start in Game 2, allowing five runs, just three earned, and striking out four in his Newman debut.

The Jets and Bulldogs meet up at noon Saturday for the rubber match.
