Emporia State Snaps Jets Streak At Nine Wins

EMPORIA, Kan. — After running its NCAA-era-best winning streak to nine games after back-to-back weekend sweeps, the Newman baseball team saw a midweek game snap its run, falling 3-1 on the road to Emporia State Tuesday afternoon.

The Jets (10-3) picked up a leadoff home run from Lucas Norton and got eight solid innings of work on the mound from Chase Wilson and Ryan Jenkins, but the Hornets (10-3) were able to scrape across three runs over the middle innings to win the battle of two teams off to fast starts to the season.

Norton lifted his first homer of the season to center on the first pitch of the game, and Tyler Bugner followed with a single up the middle and his 10th stolen base in 13 games, but Emporia starter Jake Eikleberry retired the next 12 batters he faced as his team took the lead with two runs in the third.

Jordan Doan singled and Brian Canfield followed with a walk to put two on with none out in the fifth for the guests, but a double play helped cut that inning short before the Hornets tacked on another run in the bottom half of the frame. Newman put runners on in three of the final four innings while Jenkins faced the minimum the rest of the way after getting a double play to get out of the sixth, but the Jets couldn't add a run to put some pressure on the hosts down the stretch.

Doan and Norton each went 2-for-4 for the Jets, while Garett Thomas added the team's sixth hit with a double in the ninth. Wilson worked the first five innings on the hill, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking none and picking up two strikeouts, and Jenkins tossed the final three innings giving up just two hits and a walk.

The Jets take on Augustana in a four-game series for their final nonconference series this weekend back at McCarthy Field.
