Jets Fall In Longest Game In Program History

WICHITA, Kan. — Stuck in a tough Heartland Conference-opening series, the Newman baseball team saw Lubbock Christian claw its way back into the game and eventually win in extra innings in the series finale Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field.

The Jets (13-7, 1-2 Heartland) shot out to a six-run lead over the first four innings, but the Chaparrals (15-5, 2-1 Heartland) inched their way back until tying it in the top of the ninth and going on to earn a 10-6 victory in 13 innings in the longest game in the history of the Newman program.

After holding off challenges from the Chaparrals in both the first and second innings shot out to the lead in the bottom half of the second. Garett Thomas singled to center to start the frame, and was followed by another single from Brian Canfield. Mitchell Beaudreau chopped another single up the middle to load the bases with one out, and Nick Griffin beat out the back end of a double play as Thomas and Canfield scored on an error. Jacob Hamerle added a fourth hit in the inning — a single to center — to drive in Griffin to make it a 3-0 game.

Newman starter Kane McCarthy settled down to toss a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, and the Jets followed that up with another big inning, as Griffin was hit by a pitch with one out and Hamerle walked to put two runners on. Lucas Norton singled to right to drive in Griffin, and Tyler Bugner smacked a triple into the corner in right to score two more and turn it into a 6-0 lead for the Jets after four innings.

The Chaps answered right away in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs to cut the deficit in half, and a two-run home run in the eighth pulled the guests to within one. The gap was fully closed with an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth, sending it to the bottom of the inning with the Jets having a chance to walk off for the second time in as many days. Thomas led the frame off with his second double of the game, but the Jets couldn't scratch the game-winning run across.

Both the Newman and LCU bullpens breezed through the lineups in the first three extra innings, with neither allowing a baserunner. The Chaparrals opened up in the 13th though, scoring four times to earn the winning margin.

Thomas finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Bugner had two hits and a pair of RBIs on his triple.

The Jets will take two days off before hosting No. 14 Emporia State, making it four straight games against ranked opponents, Tuesday at 5 p.m.
