OKLAHOMA CITY — Another fast start, and a big inning late, helped propel the Newman baseball team to a 13-7 victory in the series finale against Oklahoma Christian Saturday afternoon.
The Jets (21-10, 8-4 Heartland) plated four runs in the top of the first, and put up five in the seventh to make the lead a bit more comfortable as they turned back the Eagles (16-15, 7-5 Heartland) for the second time in the weekend to make it three straight series wins in conference play over the past three weeks.
Lucas Norton got things started with a single in the first, which set the stage for Garett Thomas' two-run home run that gave the guests a lead they would never surrender. Brian Canfield pushed a single through the left side with the bases loaded to get another run across, and Jacob Hamerle picked up a walk to scrape one more across and make it 4-0 before the Eagles came to bat.
Tyler Bugner led off the second inning with the team's second long ball of the day, popping a solo shot to right center to extend the lead to 5-0. OC answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to get on the scoreboard, and both teams cooled off in the third.
Newman tacked on two more in the top of the fourth, as Thomas singled in Bugner before scoring himself on a sacrifice fly from Canfield. The hosts matched that in the bottom half and then cut into the lead with another run in the fifth to make it 7-4, but the Jet bats came alive in a big way in the seventh to build the cushion.
Sending 10 batters to the plate for the second time in the game, the Jets scored three times before the first out of the inning was recorded. Hamerle worked his second bases-loaded walk of the game, and Norton followed with a two-run single to make it 10-4. After a double play, Newman managed two more runs on RBI singles from Thomas and Nick Griffin to make it a 12-4 game with three more chances at the plate for the Eagles.
OC did manage to play some catch-up, scoring three in the eighth, but Aaron Mack's RBI fielder's choice scored Bugner in the top of the ninth, and Joe Cannady worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
Griffin was one of a number of productive Jets at the plate on the day, finishing 4-for-5 with an RBI, while Thomas went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Bugner also added three hits, while Norton and Canfield each added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Kane McCarthy worked well with the lead, going five innings while scattering eight hits and a walk to earn the win, and Ryan Jenkins and Cannady combined to toss three shutout innings out of the bullpen.
The Jets head back home for much of the next two weeks, beginning with a nonconference game against William Jewell Wednesday.
