WICHITA, Kan. — In Saturday's finale of the three-game Heartland Conference baseball series between Newman and St. Mary's, there was once again plenty of offense but the Jets couldn't manufacture enough runs to keep up with the Rattlers.
The Jets (22-15, 8-7 Heartland) and the Rattlers (23-14, 9-6), started right where they left off from the night before, each hitting the ball well and scoring runs early.
St. Mary's would score the game's first run in the top of the first, off of a solo shot to right field but Newman would answer right back in the bottom of the first. Aaron Mack drove in the Jets first run of the day with an RBI single to right field, scoring Lucas Norton, to tie it up 1-1 after the first inning.
The Jets would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs. Paul Rupnik hit a double to deep left center that drove in Mitchell Beaudreau from first base and Rupnik would advance to third on the throw. Two batters later Norton would drive in Rupnik from third on an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 3-1 after two complete innings.
In the bottom of the third, Newman would score another run off of a fielding error that got Nick Griffin home from second base off of his double to left center and it would extend the NU lead to 4-1 after three innings.
The Rattlers would squeeze the Jet lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs and making it 4-3 NU after four innings.
Neither team could get anything on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, but St. Mary's eventually recaptured the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs to make the score 7-4 in favor of the Rattlers, after six innings.
The Rattlers would score two runs in the seventh, four in the eighth and one in the ninth to put the score at 14-4, heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The Jets couldn't get much going offensively in the middle or late innings, only getting two hits after the bottom of the third until the bottom of the ninth. Newman wouldn't back down though getting four hits and five runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Beaudreau would clear the bases on a three-run double to straight away center, to make it 14-7 St. Mary's. Jacob Hamerle would single through the right side to score Beaudreau, and Rupnik would score the final run for the Jets on a wild pitch, to make the final score 14-9.
Beaudreau finished the day 2-for-4 with one double, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Rupnik went 2-for-5 with one double, one RBI and two runs scored.
The Jets will take the field again Wednesday in a nonconference rematch at William Jewell.
