WICHITA, Kan. — Extending its program-record scoreless streak nearly another full game, the Newman women's soccer team saw Washburn sneak in a late goal to get out of Wilkins Field with a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (2-1-2 overall) saw their back line holding under increasing pressure from the Ichabods (2-2-0) in the second half, but one final rally was a bit too much, as Washburn got a ball down the right flank, chipped it inside and sent home the game-winning goal with just under five minutes to play in the game.
SCORING PLAYS
86'-Washburn-Emily Stauffer, assist Kate Combs. Combs cross from the right side, Stauffer stepped back to receive and beat keeper with a high shot to the left.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Cydney Padilla took the first shot of the game for the Jets, putting one on goal that the Ichabod keeper had to play, but it was one of just two the hosts would get off in the first half, including a quiet final 30 minutes from the Jets.
-There were no shots at all in the last 17 minutes of the first half, although Washburn's Morgan El-Attrache took three shots herself in the first 28. Her final one forced Newman's Kelsi Langley to make a play, one of her two saves in the opening 45 minutes.
-What was a balanced and somewhat quiet first half turned into a more lopsided second, as the Jets were held without a shot. The Ichabods took five shots before their game-winner found the back of the net.
NOTES
-The Jets' impressive scoreless streak lasted 607 minutes over seven games. Newman last allowed a goal in the 58th minute of a win against Rogers State last October 29, shut out the Hillcats for the final 32 minutes, and then tossed five consecutive shutouts until Sunday.
WHAT'S NEXT
Newman gets a little bit of a break after playing five games in 10 days, waiting until Thursday to resume Heartland Conference play at Texas A&M International.
