Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late Goal Keeps Jets Unbeaten In Heartland Play

LAREDO, Texas — With its defense continuing to churn along at an impressive pace, the Newman women's soccer team pitched another shutout and picked up a clutch late goal to top Texas A&M International 1-0 in its first Heartland Conference road game of the season Thursday evening.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (3-1-2, 2-0-0 Heartland) dominated possession throughout the game, but couldn't find the back of the net through the first 83 minutes of the game. Morgan Foster fixed that problem by taking advantage of a loose ball, uncorking a shot that beat the keeper and finally gave Newman the lead over the Dustdevils (0-4-0, 0-2-0 Heartland).

SCORING PLAYS

-84'-Newman-Morgan Foster, unassisted. Foster scooped up a free ball in the offensive half of the field and moved into the box, cracking a shot from 15 yards out.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The hosts took possession to start the game and got the first shot of the game, although it drifted wide. The Jets didn't let that pattern persist though, as Rosa Urista-Chico, Vanessa Ortiz and Foster each recorded a shot in the next eight minutes.

-Urista-Chico got Newman's most dangerous chance of the early part of the game in the 15th, cranking a shot off the crossbar and putting up another shot that required a save less than a minute later.

-Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam needed to stop just two of TAMIU's four shots in the opening 45 minutes, while the Jets peppered the Dustdevil end of the field throughout the half, rarely going more than five minutes without a shot.

-The guests started the second half in a similar fashion, as a three-minute period saw Foster and Urista-Chico get shots off, the Jets snatch two corners, and Natalie Espino get a shot blocked after one of them.

-Newman's chances became more and more dangerous as the period continued, as the Jets completely ensnared the momentum for the first 25 minutes after halftime. Over that stretch, Newman uncorked 13 shots and got seven corners, but couldn't break the scoreless tie.

-A short burst of offense from TAMIU had the Jets hanging on to that tie for a few minutes, but the only shot of the final 11 minutes was Foster's game-winner, and Newman held the Dustdevils at bay.

NOTES

-Another clean sheet for the Newman defense is its fifth of the season in six games, and sixth in its past seven matches dating back to last season. The Jets have allowed just one goal in 580 minutes of action in 2016.

-Foster's score was the second game-winning goal of the season, and by far the most dramatic finish in the first third of the season. The senior took 12 shots on the night, three of them on-goal.

-The Jets held a 30-15 advantage in shots over the Dustdevils, doubling up the hosts' shots on goal, 10-5. Their seven corners in the second half followed five in the first half, giving them a 12-1 lift on those set pieces.

-This is the first time since joining the Heartland Conference that the Jets have begun league play with two consecutive victories.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets start their way back north, stopping in San Antonio for a 1 p.m. matchup against undefeated St. Mary's.
