SAN ANTONIO — Facing off against a team that had won each of its first four matches of the season and netted 25 goals, the Newman women's soccer team played another excellent defensive game and forced a 0-0 draw at St. Mary's Saturday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (3-1-3, 2-0-1 Heartland) dominated the second extra session, holding the Rattlers (4-0-1, 2-0-1 Heartland) without a shot in the final 10 minutes. In return, Newman uncorked five of their own, with Erin Mink taking four of them. Her most dangerous came with less than two minutes remaining, trying to chip one inside the keeper that was ultimately saved.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman started out fast, with Rosa Urista-Chico blasting a shot wide less than a minute into the game. That was followed by Morgan Foster having a shot blocked and Caitlin Davis forcing a save, all three shots coming in the first four minutes.
-Urista-Chico and Cydney Padilla each got the St. Mary's keeper moving as the half went on, getting off shots that forced saves in the 18th and 22nd minutes, respectively. The Rattlers only had one shot in the first 35 minutes of action.
-The hosts made up for the lack of action late in the opening half though, taking three corners in four minutes and a pair of shots, including one that was stopped by Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam.
-Foster and Urista-Chico each put up a shot in the first 10 minutes of the second half, those tries coming around back-to-back shots from the Rattlers. Urista-Chico's next shot was blocked, and more attempts from Mink and Foster each got the Jets close to scoring.
-Madison Decker gave the guests their final chance to win in regulation, but her strike was stopped in the 87th, forcing the game into overtime.
-A quick shot by Sheree Molina in the extra session gave the Jets their first opportunity, although St. Mary's controlled the rest of the first period of overtime, taking three shots that were saved, wide and blocked.
NOTES
-The Jets controlled possession throughout the game, and certainly had the lead in dangerous chances. They led in shots by a 20-13 margin, and doubled up the Rattlers 8-4 in shots on goal.
-Once again, Newman proved that scoring a goal against its defense may be one of the toughest things in the country to do. They've now pitched six shutouts in seven games this season, and seven in their last eight games dating back to last season.
-The Jets have allowed just one goal in 690 minutes of play this year. Their six shutouts matches the program record in a season since moving to Division II, with 11 games still to play.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Jets face their toughest test of the season thus far next weekend, beginning by hosting Dallas Baptist Thursday evening.
