Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Newman Suffers OT Loss To Dallas Baptist

WICHITA, Kan. — A promising start had the Newman women's soccer team playing even with Dallas Baptist Thursday evening at Wilkins Field, but the guests got the first dangerous chance of overtime and cashed in, taking a 2-1 victory.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (3-2-3, 1-1-1, 4 pts Heartland) pushed the action for long stretches of the game, and seemed to have their chance to take the lead when the Patriots (3-3-1, 3-1-0, 9 pts Heartland) were called for a hand ball in the box, setting the hosts up with a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Vanessa Ortiz put a good strike on the ball, but DBU keeper Hope Koym made a diving save to preserve the 1-1 tie.

SCORING PLAYS

27'-Dallas Baptist-Emmy Niece, assist Geneva Martinez. Corner kick across box found Niece on far post, shot beat keeper near side.

36'-Newman-Cydney Padilla, assist Emma Stewart. Corner from left side of box to right side, low shot past keeper.

95'-Dallas Baptist-Rebecca Kernen. Kernen met a defender at the top of the box, sliding shot to upper left corner.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Korrie Raney kicked off a fast start for the Jets, chipping one from the left wing that got Koym out of her net. Morgan Foster did the same in the 17th minute, working a corner after DBU made the save.

-The Patriots responded with a stretch of their own that was capped by their first goal of the game. A pair of shots were both blocked from inside the box, and an offsides call negated another chance before a corner led to the score.

-It didn't take long for Newman to get back on the offensive, as Rosa Urista-Chico cracked a pair of shots, one needing saving and another wide within three minutes of the goal. Caitlin Davis put up another shot on goal, and a corner brought the Jets even at 1-1.

-Erin Mink and Raney each put up another shot in the final minutes of the opening half, and the Jets ripped off the first five shots of the second half, all in the first 12 minutes, including one from Madison Decker that hit the crossbar and two each from Foster and Urista-Chico.

-Things slowed down in the rest of the second half until Newman had the opportunity on the PK, and the final seven minutes ticked off the clock in regulation.

NOTES

-It was the fourth overtime game in eight matches on the season, and the first loss after three draws in games that went to extra time.

-The defeat was the first for the Jets against a Heartland Conference opponent in its last seven tries. Their last league loss came last October against St. Mary's, and they're 5-1-1 in games since.

-Newman outshot DBU 17-8 in the game, including 9-2 in the second half. The count on-goal was 12-4 in favor of the Jets.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets face another stiff test Saturday afternoon, hosting No. 24 St. Edwards at noon at Wilkins Field.
