Jets Fall To St. Edward's In Heavily Delayed Match

WICHITA, Kan. — Facing its toughest matchup of the season, the Newman women's soccer team held tough against No. 23 St. Edward's, but ultimately fell 3-1 in a game that was twice delayed and finally ended early because of lightning.

KEY SEQUENCE

Despite being behind in possession for much of the game, the Jets (3-3-3, 2-2-1, 7 pts Heartland) managed to hang with the Hilltoppers (5-1-1, 4-0-1, 13 pts Heartland) throughout the first half. After nearly an hour delay at the end of halftime, the guests picked up the first opportunity of the second half, heading in a corner kick in the 49th minute to get the all-important second goal.

SCORING PLAYS

20'-St. Edward's-Sydney Carroll, assist India Wentz. Wentz sent a long ball into the box, which Carroll got a head on to just slip by the keeper and inside the right post.

49'-St. Edward's-Ashley Valsin-Luu, assist Jenna Lipscomb. Corner from right side, Valsin-Luu header from the center of the box.

61'-St. Edward's-Kelly Andrus, assist Jennifer Boudreau. Short cross from Boudreau to right side of box, where Andrus hit a one-timer high into the net.

79'-Newman-Erin Mink, penalty kick. Mink buried a shot just under the crossbar to the right side after the Hilltoppers were whistled for a foul in the box.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Hilltoppers managed a pair of shots in the first eight minutes of the game as they controlled the possession. The game's first shot on goal came in the 12th minute, when SEU's Toni Tewes chipped a shot that forced a save out of Newman's Kelsi Langley.

-A pair of corners from SEU failed to create a dangerous chance in the 18th, but the guests were able to take advantage of a nice pass to get on the board in the 20th.

-Newman's first shot of the game came in the 28th, as Natalie Espino was able to get a header off from about 12 yards out, but Hilltopper keeper Lorrie Santoy came up with the save. Erin Mink got another shot off in the 38th, but the attempt from a sharp angle on the left side went wide.

-The Hilltoppers doubled their lead quickly in the second half, getting another header, this time off a corner in the 49th. That lead stretched to 3-0 on a shot from the right side in the 61st.

-Erin Mink converted on a penalty kick to get the Jets on the board before a final lightning delay ended the game.

NOTES

-Newman was outshot for the first time in five Heartland Conference games this season, as the Hilltoppers held a 14-4 edge. SEU also picked up seven corners while the Jets had none.
