Newman Looks To Stay Unbeaten In Conference Play

WICHITA, Kan. — Starting the season with an incredible defensive performance and an early win in league play, the Newman women's soccer team will look to continue its unbeaten streak against Heartland Conference foes this weekend against Texas A&M International and St. Mary's.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (2-1-2, 1-0-0 Heartland) found their offensive touch last Thursday, getting an early start to conference play by besting Rogers State at home. Newman's 607-minute shutout streak, and their four-game unbeaten streak to start the season, came to an end when Washburn slipped in a late goal to win 1-0 on Sunday.

SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS

Texas A&M International (0-4-0, 0-1-0 Heartland) is still in search of its first positive decision of the season, often falling by tight scores. The Dustdevils started conference play by falling to St. Mary's in the most lopsided loss of their young season, dropping a 7-3 game in San Antonio.

SCOUTING THE RATTLERS

St. Mary's (3-0-0, 1-0-0 Heartland) will have not played a game in nearly a week when its weekend gets started Thursday against Rogers State. Sunday's game at Eastern New Mexico was rained out, which followed a 3-1 win over Texas-Permian Basin.

NOTES

-Newman's 607-minute shutout streak — dating back to the second half of the Rogers State game in October of last season — was the longest in program history. Only seven teams still have yet to allow a goal this season in all of Division II, and six have played just three or fewer games. Of team's that have played at least five games, Newman is tied for first in the country with a .184 goals-against average.

-TAMIU was right in a pair of one-goal games against Adams State and Midwestern State before falling by the closest of margins. The Dustdevils quickly tied the game early against Adams State only to see them score with less than 25 minutes remaining, and battled all game to force a tying goal in the 85th minute against MSU just to have the Mustangs go back ahead one minute later.

-A lopsided 12-0 win will certainly help boost the stats, but 13 different St. Mary's players have scored a goal in just three games, including five with at least two scores. It's also led the Rattlers to be more rested, as just five players have been on the field more than 200 minutes.
