PUEBLO, Colo. — In a tight season opener for both teams that featured just four total shots on goal, the Newman men's soccer team fell 1-0 at Colorado State-Pueblo Friday night.
KEY SEQUENCE
After little offense leading up to it, the Jets (0-1 overall) managed to get on the attack late in the second half. A red card in the 77th minute had the ThunderWolves (1-0 overall) playing down a man, but they were able to hold off the equalizer when Jamie Barkway's shot was knocked away by the keeper.
SCORING PLAYS
32'-Colorado State-Pueblo-Miles Sanchez, assist Mackenzie Paquette. A feed from Paquette put Sanchez one-on-one with a defender, and he knocked it home to the far corner.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman keeper Calum Dillon got in on the action early, making his first of two saves in the fifth minute and surviving an ensuing corner from the ThunderWolves.
-The next 25 minutes were disjointed, with a shot from each team tucked in between seven fouls and a yellow card, and Pueblo managed to sneak in the game's only score at the end of that frame.
-Luca Anelli got off the Jets' second shot under two minutes after the hosts' goal, but the blast sailed high, sending the teams to the break still looking at the same 1-0 score.
-An offside call in the 52nd minute thwarted what could have been a scoring opportunity for Newman, and Dillon kept the deficit at one with a save three minutes later.
-The ThunderWolves maintained control of the game until the final 10 minutes, when the red card put them at a disadvantage and Barkway got off his shot. Ed Jabbari had the guests' final chance to draw even, but his shot with six minutes to go had too much behind it.
NOTES
-The loss was the Jets' first in a season opener since 2013.
-Newman's five shots was the fewest since being held to four by St. Edward's in the 2014 season finale. The combined four shots on goal between the two teams was the least active Jet game since doing the same against SEU in 2013.
