Jets Close Weekend With Draw Against Missouri Southern

WICHITA, Kan. — With its offense limited by an athletic opposing defense, the Newman women's soccer team put up a solid defense effort of its own and fought to a 0-0 draw against Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

An early offensive chance that may have helped avoid overtime all together went by the wayside, but the Jets (1-0-1 overall) had a chance to win it outright two minutes into the second session of extra time against the Lions (0-1-1 overall). Madison Decker got a feed along the right flank and chipped a shot over the keeper, only to see it skip off the far post. Rosa Urista-Chico was the for the rebound, but her attempt was saved at the line by a MSSU defender to keep the winning goal off the board.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Jets got all the chances early, beginning just 30 ticks into the game, when Urista-Chico let loose a shot that sailed wide left. The junior had another opporntunity in the ninth minute when a slick pass got her behind the keeper, but her shot from a sharp angle on the right side just missed wide.

-A restart after an MSSU yellow card in the 35th quickly got to Caitlin Davis, who lifted a shot that was saved by the Lions' keeper.

-Southern's best scoring chance of the game came just before half in the 42nd minute. A shot from the left wing made Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam lay out to deflect the shot, and with the ball still skipping toward the goal, Tara Minx swatted it off the goal line and out of danger to prevent the game's first score.

-Kelsi Langley got the call in net in the second half, and had to work early, turning back two shots in the first nine minutes of the period. Those were the only two shots she had to get her hands on in her 65 minutes of action.

-The Jets continued to gain their fair share of possession as regulation ticked away, and were able to put a little bit of pressure on the Lions, but couldn't put together a great scoring chance until their rush early in the second OT.

NOTES

-Davis put all three of her shots on goal to force the MSSU goalie to work. Urista-Chico once again led the Jets in total shots, putting up five on the day.

-Newman held a 14-9 advantage in shots, and put five shots on goal to the Lions' four.

-Dating back to last season, the Jets are undefeated in their last five games at 4-0-1. Newman has also put up three consecutive shutouts for the first time in its NCAA Division II history.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets take to the road for the first time this season on Tuesday, heading to Ada, Oklahoma to face off against East Central at 4 p.m.
