Jets Grab Big Point With Draw Against St. Edward's

WICHITA, Kan. — Locked in a tie game for all but a 2:13 span, the Newman women's soccer team picked up a crucial point with a 1-1 draw against St. Edward's in Heartland Conference action Thursday night at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

After Ashley Sweetnam corralled a shot in the 75th for the Jets (7-4-2, 4-3-2 Heartland) to keep things tied at one against the Hilltoppers (7-2-4, 5-1-3 Heartland), Newman turned on its own offensive charge, outshooting SEU 8-2 over the final 35 minutes. The hosts weren't able to cash in though. Settling for the draw.

SEU-8'-Chidera Aririguzo, assist India Wentz

HOW IT HAPPENED

-In a big matchup as the second half of the conference season got underway, Rosa Urista-Chico put the Jets ahead quickly. Her strike from the left side of the box was the first shot of the game, and put Newman up less than five minutes in.

-It didn't take long for St. Edward's to respond though, as just over two minutes later, Chidera Aririguzo headed a shot that just got over Sweetnam's outstretched fingers to tie things up. The Hilltoppers then had a shot skip off the post in the 11th and one get scooped up by Sweetnam in the 23rd.

-Newman only managed three shots in the first half, but picked up the intensity late. Colleen Howland got two shots off in the first 20 minutes of the second half, and with 15 minutes to play in regulation, the Jets got off a flurry. Urista-Chico earned two dangerous chances, one blocked and one saved.

-Two early shots by St. Edward's in the first overtime session were both saved by Sweetnam, and Newman followed with continual pressure for the final 17 minutes of the game. Howland unleashed a shot that went high of the goal in the first overtime, and got behind the defense and number of times, but the Jets couldn't find the golden goal.

NOTES

-Urista-Chico's goal was her ninth of the season, which is second in the Heartland and gave the senior the team lead.

-Newman created more chances than St. Ed's, outshooting the guests 14-9, but each team put five shots on goal, and the Hilltoppers earned seven corner's to Newman's one.

-The draw was a big point for the Jets, as it was their first result against the Hilltoppers since 2011, and kept them in the thick of a tight race for the Heartland Conference postseason with five games to play.
