Jets Drop Rain-Soaked, Lightning-Delayed Heartbreaker To DBU

WICHITA, Kan. — In a game that featured nearly two and a half hours of delays due to lightning and was ultimately called early due to weather, the Newman women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at the hands of Dallas Baptist Saturday in Heartland Conference action at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

Knowing that the game could be called after 70 minutes and the result official, the Jets (7-5-2, 4-4-2 Heartland) were holding on to a 1-0 lead as rain began pouring down in the second half. Scrambling to at least tie it, the Patriots (9-3-2, 7-1-2 Heartland) did more than that, as Brittany Eccles connected twice from distance, the final coming in the 74th minute, and the game was called due to lightning before the ball was put back in play.

DBU-68'-Brittany Eccles, unassisted
DBU-74'-Eccles, unassisted

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After the start was pushed back by overtime in the preceding men's game and Senior Day festivities for the women, kickoff was delayed even more by a lightning strike during introductions. The teams got back on the field 70 minutes after the original scheduled start time.

-Rosa Urista-Chico didn't take long to get into a groove after the delays, giving the Jets the lead in the fourth minute. Colleen Howland poked a short cross into the box from the right side, and the ball bounced off a defender and hung in the air in front of Urista-Chico, who knocked it in with her heel to open the scoring.

-The game was delayed once again in the 11th minute, this suspension lasting two hours, 14 minutes. Newman again came out of the break on fire, as Dayna Johnson chipped a shot high in the 17th, and Urista-Chico followed with a shot that was knocked just wide in the 19th. That set up a pair of corners, and Howland got a foot on the second that drew a save from DBU keeper Hope Koym.

-DBU started upping the pressure late in the half, and Ashley Sweetnam made a pair of nice saves in the final 10 minutes to keep the Jets in front.

-Neither team got a shot off in the first 17 minutes of the second half, and an extended downpour helped bog down the action even more. With lightning due to move back in the area and the game possibly going official if a strike came after the 70th minute, the Patriots got a crucial equalizer in the 68th from Brittany Eccles, who corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and uncorked a shot from 25 yards out that beat a diving Sweetnam to the left post.

-With the rain still coming down, Eccles nearly mirrored her first goal, this time knocking a ball from 30 yards out on the right side inside the far post. That score stood as final, as a lightning strike never let the ensuing kickoff happen.

NOTES

-The Jets outshot the Patriots 7-6 for the game, but DBU got off six of the final eight shots of the game.

-Newman heads into a crucial final two weeks of the season, all on the road. The Jets sit in fifth place, with the top four making the Heartland Conference tournament.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets hit the road for their final four games, beginning Thursday at St. Mary's.
