WICHITA, Kan. — A slow game that saw just one good chance in regulation opened up a bit in overtime, but the Newman men's soccer team had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Rogers State Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference action.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (4-6-4, 2-5-3 Heartland) and the Hillcats (6-5-3, 3-4-3 Heartland), didn't do much in the first 90 minutes, but the guests found renewed momentum in the extra periods, getting off five shots to Newman's two, but the hosts held on to still pick up a point.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Neither team got many dangerous chances in the first half. Hani Berchiche uncorked a shot from the top of the box that went wide in the sixth, and Fernando Robles lofted a ball into the box that forced a save out of RSU keeper Walker Farrar, but the Jets didn't pick up a great opportunity.
-Rogers nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd. After playing in their own defensive end for much of the half, the Hillcats chipped a cross into the box that got through, bounced over the head of Newman keeper Chase Bowman, and went off the crossbar. RSU's Jarrod Cooper got a foot on the rebound, but Newman's Andreas Agrell knocked the ball off the line.
-The second half saw limited action on the ends of the field. Newman had two nice shots from the top of the box, one from Jared Rangel and the other out of Ed Jabbari, but both slid wide.
NOTES
-Newman pushed its unbeaten streak to five games, going 2-0-3 over the past two weeks.
-Chase Bowman notched his fourth straight shutout. The freshman has now not allowed a goal in 429 minutes of action.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Jets hit the road next week, beginning with a trip to St. Mary's on Thursday.
