Jets Fall In Four Sets To Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas — Locked in tight games throughout the night, the Newman volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Lubbock Christian Thursday night in Heartland Conference action.

KEY SEQUENCE

Needing to get a win in the fourth set, the Jets (9-14, 3-4 Heartland) opened up strong, building a lead that sat at 19-17 late against the Chaparrals (7-13, 4-3 Heartland). LCU responded by scoring the next five points though, and even after Newman closed it to 22-21 after a pair of kills, the hosts netted three of the final four points to close out a 27-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-22 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After an early run to give LCU an 8-5 lead in the first set, the Jets picked up a kill from Hailey Braddy and a block from Yemima Buana and Kayla Turner to tie things at 8-8. Turner notched two kills and Emily Harvey added one a few points later to help Newman push ahead 13-11, but the Chaps went on a 7-3 run to go back ahead 18-16 and eventually went up 22-18. Newman rallied with three kills from Harvey and one each from Crystal Powell and Turner to make it 25-24, but the hosts squeaked out the win.

-Newman didn't seem to take the early deficit well, as the Jets rolled off the first 10 points of the second set, with Turner recording three aces, and built a 19-3 lead. LCU snuck back in it with a nice run of its own, getting it back to 21-15, but Newman answered the threat, getting kills out of Turner and Harvey to score four of the final six points and tie the match.

-A block, two kills and a Powell ace helped the Jets to a 4-2 lead in the third. The Chaps twice got back in front early in the set, but Newman tied it at 7-7 with a Turner kill and again at 8-8 with an error. The hosts went back ahead for good on the next point, but Newman kept things close for a while, making it 12-10 with a Harvey kill, and trailed 18-14 after a kill from Braddy. LCU closed strong though, taking a big 2-1 lead.

-The Jets opened the crucial fourth set strong, going ahead 5-4. Lubbock Christian briefly took a 6-5 lead, but kills from Buana and Turner, followed by an Anna Burton ace to make it 8-6. Newman kept that lead and built it to 13-8 after a Braddy kill and a block from Harvey and Powell, but the Chaps slowly chipped away until their late run.

NOTES

-Reagen Roth set a new career high with 47 assists on the night. The freshman is averaging 9.67 assists per set over her past four matches.

-Turner added another career high for the Jets, as the senior notched 18 kills. She added 22 digs for her seventh double-double of the season, hit .350 and chipped in three aces.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets make a quick turnaround, facing West Texas A&M and Midwestern State in nonconference action Friday.
