WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Playing its second and third matches in 26 hours, the Newman volleyball team fell in a pair of nonconference matches Friday.
The Jets (9-16) took on a pair of foes from the Lone Star Conference, falling to West Texas A&M 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-10) and Midwestern State 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15).
Against the Buffs (14-10), Newman went back and forth with swings of momentum in the first, going up 16-14, and again at 22-21 and 23-22, but West Texas picked up four of the final five points to squeak out an early lead. A four-point burst early in the second put the Jets ahead, but the Buffs rebounded again to grab the win, and earned a comfortable victory in the third to seal the match.
Emily Harvey led the way for the Jets with 15 kills, while Anna Burton added 18 digs.
After a short break, Newman took on the Mustangs (11-11), who hosted the tri-match. A solid effort throughout from both teams, MSU pulled away late to take an early 1-0 lead. Newman responded, bounding back from an early deficit to take a 19-15 lead late, and although the Mustangs rallied and fended off set point once, a kill from Hailey Braddy ended it and tied the match.
The Jets were the ones coming back in the third, as the Mustangs led 17-13 until a late 3-0 spurt tied things at 21-all. A Yemima Buana kill tied it at 23-23, but MSU scored two straight to go up in the match, and controlled the second half of the fourth set to cap its win.
Against the Mustangs, Reagen Roth put up 43 assists and 10 digs, while Kayla Turner added 15 kills, Harvey 12 and Buana 10.
Newman starts its final week at home with a nonconference match against Friends on Monday at Fugate Gymnasium.
