WICHITA, Kan. — Turning in a balanced effort in its final nonconference game of the season, the Newman volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Friends Monday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
With their opponent trying to overcome an early deficit in the second set, the Jets (10-16) wouldn't let it happen against the Falcons (8-22). With her team up just 22-19 late, Yemima Buana registered two kills and two blocks, teaming up on one with Kayla Turner, to have a hand in Newman's final four points to win the set and move ahead in the 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Four straight points, including three kills from Emily Harvey, got the match started, and when Friends climbed back into it, Buana and Turner teamed up for a block and a kill each, followed by a Hailey Braddy ace to go up 13-7. After the guests made it 18-17, the Jets answered with a 6-1 run to move to set point, and a Sophia Helsing kill ended it.
-Kills from Braddy and Buana keyed a 3-0 spurt to make it 5-2 early in the second. Turner ran a 4-0 burst with two kills, a block and an assist to make it 10-4, and although the Falcons drew closer as the set continued, the Jets maintained a lead.
-A kill on the first point of the third set gave Friends the only lead it would enjoy in any of the three sets on the night, and Newman answered right away to go up 3-1 on the strength of a Braddy kill and a Turner ace. The Falcons got as close as 12-10 later, but Braddy chipped in a pair of kills as part of a 5-1 run to go up 17-11 and cruise the rest of the way.
NOTES
-Newman trailed just once in the match, at 1-0 in the third set.
-Buana turned in one of her best matches of the season, going for eight kills on .429 hitting and six blocks, including three solo.
-Braddy and Harvey each put up nine kills to lead the Jets, while Reagen Roth added 33 assists and Anna Burton 11 digs.
