WICHITA, Kan. — Coming back to Fugate Gymnasium for the first time in two weeks, the Newman volleyball team fell 3-1 to Emporia State in a close nonconference match Tuesday evening.
KEY SEQUENCE
A tight match throughout, the Jets (8-11) were leading the Hornets (10-8) by a 22-21 score late in an important third set, looking to close out the game and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Instead, it was the guests that took that key set, scoring four of the final five points of the set to eke out a win on their way to a 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After going down 2-0 in the first set, the Jets rolled off six straight points, getting two kills from Emily Harvey and an ace from Kayla Turner. After the Hornets got it back to two, Sarah Peterson notched an ace and Megan Pedersen a kill to key a 5-2 run that made it 13-7, and the hosts controlled it from there. Pedersen put up two kills and Crystal Powell ended the set with a solo block.
-An early lead by Newman turned into a small advantage for ESU, which found its way to a 13-8 lead. A big block from Powell and Harvey got it to within 16-14, then a 4-0 spurt with two aces from Reagen Roth tied things at 19-19. A rough finish to the set allowed the Hornets to net the last six points and tie things up in the match.
-The Jets started the third on a roll, getting two Harvey kills and a block from Powell and Peterson to go up 4-1. The Hornets managed to turn that into an 8-5 advantage, but another block plus a kill from Yemima Buana helped a 3-0 run that tied it at 10-all. A 6-2 run pushed Newman back in front at 17-15, and the hosts kept the lead until Emporia's late run.
-A quick 5-1 lead for ESU helped it stay in front early in the fourth, pushing it out to 12-9. Harvey tagged a kill and Powell and Turner teamed up for a block to key a 5-0 burst that put Newman in front 14-12. The Hornets own 5-point run pushed them back in front 19-16, and they managed to hold that advantage as they closed things out.
