Jets Stalled In Tough Five Setter Aginst St. Mary's

WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman volleyball team lost a tough one at home losing in five sets to St. Mary's 3-2. The Jets look good in the first three sets going up 2-1 with the help of some good defense, timely blocks and some well-placed serves just wasn't enough to come out victorious.

KEY SQUENCE

The Jets (8-12, 2-2 Heartland) had a chance to close the match going into the final points of the fourth set but the Rattlers (8-8, 3-1 Heartland) were able to score nine big points. They took over the fourth set with four points and five to begin the fifth set.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The first set the Jets began slow going down 8-2 but with the help of some serving aces by Kayla Turner as well as some timely kills by Crystal Powell, Emily Harvey and Hailey Braddy the Jets made a comeback going up 18-13 and finishing the set winning 25-18.

-The second set the Jets started slow again going down 6-3 but making a comeback once again getting some well-placed blocks by Crystal Powell, Emily Harvey and Yemima Buana, but the Rattlers were able to find holes in the defense and would go up 24-20 and win the set 25-22.

-The third set the Jets were able to take the lead and keep it, with some good defense blocks would come from Crystal Powell, Hailey Braddy, Yemima Buana and Emily Harvey the Jets would go up 19-15, and would take the third set 25-19.

-The fourth set did not start the way the Jets wanted it to the Rattlers found spots in the Jets' defense and were able to go up 13-6. The Jets with the help of some really good defense were able to tie the set 19-19 and the Jets and Rattlers would trade points in the fourth set. The Rattlers would win the set 25-21.

-During the fifth set the Jets were off to slow start going down 6-2 to the Rattlers. The Jets would fall behind later in the set and with its comeback attempts falling short the Jets would fall in the last set 15-10.  

NOTES

-The last three conference matches for the Jets have gone to five sets, after only having one five set match in nonconference.   

-Yemima Buana had a career night for the Jets with 14 kills beating her previous high of 11 set last year, the junior hit .423 with only three errors on the night.

-Reagen Roth freshman setter posted 45 assists and 12 digs in her first time handling setting duties for the Jets.
