WICHITA, Kan. — Turning early opportunities into early goals, the Newman men's soccer team grabbed a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico in a rain-delayed contest Friday afternoon at Bishop Carroll High School
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (3-6-2, 1-5-1 Heartland) were happy with an early lead, but ecstatic when that advantage doubled just six minutes later against the Greyhounds (2-8-1, 1-6-0 Heartland). In the 24th, a charge into the offensive zone by Newman saw Carlos Rubio Garcia easily slot a ball into the box behind a defender. Jamie Barkway ran onto it and the defender-turned-striker finished it for a 2-0 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Eastern New Mexico had a few nice opportunities on counterattacks, but it was mostly Newman controlling the pace from the start. Ed Jabbari notched the Jets' first shot, forcing a save out of ENMU keeper Ryan Flores in the ninth.
-Rubio Garcia got the scoring started in the 18th, receiving a short pass from Tommy Fiszel near the center of the box and putting a shot high and right to beat Flores and give the Jets a lead they wouldn't give up. The junior added an assist with a very similar play on Barkway's goal.
-The Jets held possession for much of the rest of the half, and for the bulk of the second half. The Greyhounds managed just one shot after halftime, and Chase Bowman scooped that up with ease.
NOTES
-Newman scored multiple goals in a game for the first time since netting four in back-to-back games in nonconference play.
-The win snapped a six-game winless streak, and extended Newman's unbeaten streak to two matches.
-Rubio Garcia picked up his first multi-point game of the season. He had three games with at least one goal and one assist last year.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Jets have a quick turnaround, facing West Texas A&M Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
