WICHITA, Kan. – After a late night on Saturday, the Newman baseball team returned to the field to complete its three-game nonconference series against Wayne State Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Field but fell 12-5.

Newman received some help in the bottom of the first because all three of the runs came from two Wildcat errors when there were two outs in the inning.
Channing Williams scored the first run off the first error, while
Aaron Mack and
Nick Griffin came across home plate on the second error to put the Jets up 3-2 after one inning.
Wayne State would jump back out in front in the top of the second by scoring four runs and then added five runs in the top of the third to make the score 11-3, heading into the bottom of the third.
The Jets would add a run in the bottom of the third off a
Paul Rupnik RBI single to left center that scored Griffin from second, which made the score 11-4 after four complete innings.
Kane McCarthy saw his first action of the season on the mound by coming out of the bullpen in the fourth inning. He held the Wildcats scoreless in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, including having three strikeouts in his season debut.
Newman would get its final run of the game across in the bottom of the fifth, off another Rupnik RBI single that drove in
Brian Canfield to make the score 11-5.
Alex Hoelscher came out of the bullpen to start the seventh inning and held Wayne State scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings. He went three total innings and tallied one strikeout.
The Jets could not get anything going in the latter part of the game and lost 12-5 to the visiting Wildcats.
Rupnik led the Jets on the offensive end by going 2-of-5 and having two RBIs. He finished the series by going 7-of-11 at the plate, with two doubles and seven RBIs for the weekend.
Newman stays at home and takes on Upper Iowa in a four-game nonconference series at McCarthy Saturday and Sunday.
