WICHITA, Kan. – A chilly day outside to play baseball at McCarthy Field Saturday afternoon did not seem to slow down either team's bats as Newman took down Upper Iowa 13-10 in Game 1 and 15-12 in Game 2 of the series opening doubleheader.
Kane McCarthy was the starting pitcher in Game 1 for the Jets (4-5) going three innings. After trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second the Newman bats awoke to score four runs to take a 4-2 lead after two innings. The Jets would tack on another run in the third inning to go up 5-2.
The Peacocks (0-2) came back to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning but Newman regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs to go up 7-5.
Nick Griffin had a RBI single that drove in
Aaron Mack for the first run of the inning, while
Jordan Doan singled to left center to drive in Griffin two at-bats later. Upper Iowa would recapture the lead at 9-7 in top of the sixth by scoring four runs in the inning.
The Jets would bounce back though with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Griffin doubled to deep center to bring home
Jacob Hamerle,
Channing Williams and
Brian Canfield to take back the lead at 10-9. Doan would single again which brought Griffin home, while
Koby Nguyen singled to left field to drive in
Paul Rupnik and Doan to put the score at 13-9. Newman would hang on to win 13-10 in Game 1 and
Matt Riney earned the victory.
For Game 2
Wade Winter was the starting pitcher for Newman, going six innings. It would be scoreless for both teams in the first-two innings but that would not last long as Upper Iowa took the lead at 3-0 in the top of the third, while the Jets rallied to steal the lead at 9-3.
Williams and Rupnik led the way with two RBIs in the third, while
Easton Herring, Canfield and Hamerle each had one RBI. The other two runs in the third inning came from Peacock fielder errors. The Jets would score three runs in the bottom of fourth to extend their lead out to 12-3 with RBIs coming from
Ked Bailey, Hamerle and Canfield.
Upper Iowa would make it interesting again by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth and five runs in the top of the seventh to get within two runs at 12-10 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Newman scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead out 15-10 to give themselves a little breathing room late in the game.
Mack tripled to right field, which scored Griffin and Rupnik, while he scored himself on a Peacock throwing error on the same play to make the score 15-10 after seven complete innings. Neither team would score in the eighth inning and Newman would hang on to win Game 2 15-12. Winter was the winning pitcher for Game 2.
Newman finishes its series against Upper Iowa tomorrow at McCarthy Field with another doubleheader starting at noon.
