GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Putting up four runs in the fourth to get out to a big lead, the Newman baseball team picked up its first win of the season, topping East Central 6-0 at the Air Hogs DII Classic Friday evening.
The Jets (1-1) got 6 2/3 innings of one-hit pitching from starter Wade Winter, and Channing Williams and Aaron Mack each added a pair of hits to put together a complete effort.
Koby Nguyen's sacrifice bunt started a play that scored Nick Griffin in the fourth to open the scoring. Paul Rupnik followed with a single to left that plated two more, and Williams added another run-scoring single to open up the offense.
Williams helped add another insurance run in the sixth, getting a bunt single and stealing second, eventually coming around to score on Mack's single back up the middle.
Winter struck out three and walked two, giving up just a single as the Jets built their lead. Joe Cannady closed out the seventh and finished the eighth, allowing just one hit, and Matt Riney closed the ninth with a 1-2-3 frame.
The Jets get back to action Saturday, facing Missouri Western and Lubbock Christian to close out their trip to Texas.
