LUBBOCK, Texas - The Newman baseball team completed its three-game Heartland Conference series at Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon, falling a bit short at 4-2 in the series finale.
The Jets (18-24, 5-13 Heartland) and Chaparrals (32-10, 15-3 Heartland) held each other scoreless in the first-two innings of the contest. Newman would get on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning, first when Jacob Hamerle crossed home off a Lubbock Christian error. In the following at-bat, Ked Bailey reached home off Aaron Mack's RBI fielder's choice to put the Jets up 2-0 early on.
The Chaparrals cut into the Jet lead in the bottom frame of the third inning, by scoring a run to make the score 2-1, after three complete innings.
Jordan Doan singled up the middle with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and then stole second base to get into scoring position the following at-bat. However, the top of fourth would come to an end with Doan left at second.
With the score still remaining at 2-1, Bailey singled through the right side of the infield with one out in the top of the fifth inning and managed to get over to third base off an LCU error, but could not get home as the inning ended.
The Chaparrals knotted the score up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. All things were quiet for both teams in the sixth and seventh innings, until Lubbock Christian broke the tie by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-2 lead into the top of the ninth.
Doan doubled to right field in the top of the ninth with one out to get into scoring position but it would not be enough, as the game would come to an end at 4-2 in favor of the home team.
Doan went 3-of-4 from the plate, including one double, to lead the Jets offensively.
Newman heads to William Jewell Wednesday for a midweek nonconference game, starting at 3 p.m.
