ALVA, Okla. – The Newman baseball team traveled to Northwestern Oklahoma State Wednesday evening for a midweek nonconference game, and came away victorious by a score of 5-3.
The Jets (15-16) struck first in the game in the top of the first inning when
Nick Griffin singled to left field with two outs, which drove in
Brian Canfield to go up 1-0 early on. The Rangers (8-26) answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, to even up the score at 1-1 after one complete inning.
Garrett Hammond and the Newman fielders held Northwestern Oklahoma State scoreless during the second, third and fourth innings. The Jets broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth by scoring three runs to go up 4-1.
Jacob Hamerle scored the first run in the top of the fifth for Newman on a wild pitch from the Ranger pitcher. Canfield would single to left field to drive in
Channing Williams from third base to plate the second run of the inning for the Jets. Two at-bats later
Aaron Mack singled through the right side of the infield that scored Canfield from the second to make the score 4-1.
Neither team could get anything going in the sixth inning but the Rangers would put another run on the board in the bottom of the seventh to cut into the Jet lead at 4-2.
In the top of the eighth Canfield would deliver a deep double to right center to drive in
Jordan Doan, which was a quality insurance run late in the game for Newman to make the score 5-2. Northwestern Oklahoma State added another run in the bottom of the ninth to make the score 5-3, but that would be all as the Jets would hang on to win their third consecutive game.
Canfield went 2-of-4 from the plate this evening, with two RBIs, two runs and a double to lead the way for Newman on the road.
Newman travels down to Claremore, Oklahoma to take on Rogers State this weekend in another Heartland Conference series, starting Friday afternoon.
