SHAWNEE, Okla. — Opening its season on the road against a perennial winner, the Newman women's soccer team came back late, but fell to Oklahoma Baptist 2-1 to begin its 2017 campaign.
KEY SEQUENCE
Despite outshooting its opponent in the first half, the Jets (0-1-0) saw a quick start to the second half by the Bison (1-0-0) turn the momentum. The hosts got on the board two minutes after the break, and added what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 54th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Grace Linton put up the first shot of the season for Newman in the fourth minute, drawing a save from OBU keeper Emily Griffith. That set the tone early, as the Jets continually created chances, but couldn't break through.
-The Bison broke the scoreless tie with a header from Reagan Mann that just cleared the fingertips of Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam. Their next shot doubled their lead, as Hannah White hit the upper 90 with a shot from 25 yards out.
-The Jets didn't allow another shot for over 23 minutes, but they could only manage one of their own against a packed-in defense. Rosa Urista-Chico's relentless attack up top was able to create Newman's first goal of the season, as she pounced on a miscue by the defense and chipped a shot over the keeper to halve the deficit in the 82nd.
-Urista-Chico put up one more shot as the Jets looked to tie it late, but it was blocked, and Newman couldn't get another opportunity over the final three minutes.
NOTES
-The Jets outshot OBU 5-3 in the first half. The two teams combined for just 19 total shots in the game
-Sweetnam posted four saves on the night.
-Urista-Chico netting her goal on six shots. The senior had to wait until her 10th game of the season a year ago to score her first goal.

The Jets have the rest of the weekend off before hosting East Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the first game of the year at Wilkins Field.
