Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Hot Start Helps Jets Hold Off East Central

WICHITA, Kan. — A dominant start turned out to be just enough as the Newman women's soccer team held on to grab their first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over East Central Tuesday night at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (1-1-0) came out fast, and two early scores were crucial in what became a close game late. In the fourth minute, Grace Linton kept attacking after her first shot was blocked and followed through with a second shot to get Newman on the board against the Tigers (0-3-0). Five minutes later, the Jets' next shot also found the back of the net, courtesy of Erin Mink.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The first half was about as lopsided as it can get, as Newman outshot ECU 16-0 and put half of those shots on-goal. Mink's first goal of the season came after Rosa Urista-Chico beat a defender to a ball in the middle of the box and dished it out to Mink on the left side. Mink calmly took a touch and slid her shot inside the far post.

-Urista-Chico had a shot blast off the crossbar in the 27th minute, and Linton and Caitlin Davis each had one that required saving by Tiger keeper Chloe Hull as Newman kept the ball in their offensive half for the bulk of the opening 45 minutes. The Jets closed the half on an equally ferocious run, but couldn't add to their lead.

-With a number of reserves on the field to start the second half for Newman, Sheree Molina created some chances early, culminating in her first goal of the season when she got a ball from Katie Crouse near the top of the box, took one step to clear a defender, and beat the keeper near-post.

-ECU got some life after their first two shots of the game in the 64th and 66th. That momentum built into an impressive strike from Alexis Castillo, who lofted a shot from 45 yards out, near her own bench, that was able to sneak over the head of Newman keeper Ashley Sweetnam and into the goal to break the shutout.

-The Tigers added a second finish to make it a one-goal game in the 79th, but the Jets put their starters back in the game, and proceeded to hold the guests without a shot the rest of the way.

NOTES

-The Jets totaled 26 shots to ECU's six on the night. Newman put 16 shots on-goal to the Tigers' four. Their 26 shots was the most since taking 30 on Sept. 15 of last season at Texas A&M International, a 1-0 win.

-Linton and Molina each netted the first goal of their Newman careers, while Crouse picked up her first point with her second-half assist

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets continue a busy week with another road trip, heading to Rogers State to begin Heartland Conference play with a 7:30 p.m. matchup Thursday.
