Jets Fall To RSU In Season's First Heartland Game

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Following an even first half, the Newman women's soccer team saw Rogers State score twice in the second half to take a 2-0 victory in both teams' Heartland Conference opener Thursday night.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (1-2-0, 0-1-0 Heartland) played a tight first half against the Hillcats (3-0-0, 1-0-0 Heartland), but the hosts picked up the pace after the break. That pressure culminated in the first goal of the game in th 59th minute, and RSU managed to get a big insurance goal seven minutes later to change the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Rogers State got some early opportunities, picking up a pair of corners and a shot wide in the first 150 seconds of the game. Things calmed down after that early flurry, and Amy Strath ripped off the Jets' first shot of the game in the 22nd. Nine minutes later, Rosa Urista-Chico got the first shot on goal of the game, forcing a save out of RSU keeper Taylor Sargent.

-Dayna Johnson added another shot on goal in the 37th, as both teams started getting their shots on-target, with Emma Stewart and Urista-Chico adding chances in the final minutes before the half.

-RSU started the second half with a pair of shots, with the first score coming off a header from Daisy Cardona after a corner bounced around the box. Vanessa Ortiz added a shot for the Jets in the 63rd, but the Hillcats' Hannah Mushisky doubled the lead three minutes later.

-With RSU able to settle in with the two-goal lead, Newman wasn't able to create many chances, getting one corner kick and another shot by Strath before the final whistle.

NOTES

-Rogers held a 14-8 edge in shots, but the two teams were even with five shots on goal each. The Jets managed two corners, while RSU picked up five.

The Jets keep their road swing going with another nonconference matchup Sunday, heading to Washburn for a 2 p.m. game.
