TOPEKA, Kan. — A fast start gave the Newman women's soccer team an early boost as the team rolled to a second straight nonconference victory with a 4-1 win over Washburn Sunday.
KEY SEQUENCE
It took nine minutes for the first shot, but once the Jets (2-2-0) got going, they didn't slow down. Rosa Urista-Chico put a free kick past the keeper in the 13th minute to go up on the Ichabods (2-1-1), and Grace Linton and Colleen Howland followed with two scores in less than a minute to put the guests up 3-0 before a quarter of the game was over.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Grace Linton started what would turn into an offensive onslaught for the Jets with a shot in the 10th minute. Amy Strath followed with a shot that was blocked, but the next three shots from Newman all ended in the back of the net.
-Washburn wouldn't get its first shot until the 27th minute, after the Jets already piled up seven shots and five shots on goal. Newman added another three shots later in the half, but the Ichabods managed to get on the board on a header from Haley Schroder two minutes before the half.
-With fresh legs coming out of the break, Newman added another score, as Howland nodded in an Emma Stewart corner to shoot the lead back to three goals just five minutes into the half. Newman continued to press the rest of the way, and keeper Ashley Sweetnam made a pair of saves to preserve the lead.
NOTES
-Howland finished the game with two goals and an assist for the first points of her Newman career.
-The Jets ripped off 16 shots to the Ichabods' seven, and put 11 on-goal.

The Jets close out nonconference play and a three-game road swing with a trip to Northwestern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
