WICHITA, Kan. — Creating a few dangerous chances but unable to cash in, the Newman men's soccer team fell 3-0 to Texas-Permian Basin to open Heartland Conference play Thursday evening at Wilkins Field.
KEY SEQUENCE
Andreas Agrell made a spectacular save of a ball that got past Newman keeper Chase Bowman in the 54th minute, keeping it off the line to keep the Jets (2-2-1, 0-1-0 Heartland) down just 1-0 to the Falcons (2-1-0, 1-0-0 Heartland). However, UTPB followed up with Lipe Lima putting the rebound home to suddenly change the momentum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-UTPB came out strong, pushing the action for the first 15 minutes and getting a few chances. Newman began to settle in, beginning with their first shot of the game from Carlos Rubio Garcia in the 19th , and continuing with a flurry that saw shots from both Fernando Robles and Tommy Fiszel blocked in the 21st.
-The momentum swung back toward UTPB when the Jets were awarded a penalty kick in the 27th, and Jamie Barkway pushed the shot just high, leaving it scoreless. The Falcons managed just one shot to Newman's five in the final 30 minutes of the first half.
-A bad clearance attempt by the Jets led to the first goal just two minutes after the break, as Lima slid a ball across the box to Stefan Faria for an easy finish. Fiszel nearly tied it up a few minutes later, but his one-on-one opportunity was smothered by UTPB keeper Lucas Gomes.
-The second goal switched things into the Falcons' favor, and another twist later sealed the fate for the Jets. Barkway got to line up over another PK, and this time, Gomes guessed right and stopped the low shot to keep Newman off the board. Less than a minute later, Frankie Rodriguez had the third goal of the game.
NOTES
-Fiszel was a constant source of pressure for the Jets, finishing with six shots, two on-goal, and drew both fouls that led to penalty kicks.
