GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Controlling the pace of the game throughout, the Newman men's soccer team put up a clean sheet in its season opener, but couldn't find the back of the net itself in a 0-0 tie against South Dakota Mines Friday evening.
KEY SEQUENCE
A wild second half of regulation that featured a combined nine shots and 13 corners saw the Jets (0-0-1) with the final chance, but the Hardrockers (0-0-1) picked up a save on a shot by Connor Rackley and Hani Berchiche's shot off a corner went high in the final 30 seconds to keep things scoreless.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-There was just one shot by either side in the opening 20 minutes of the contest, but the Jet offense picked up the pace from there. Rich Wincer put Newman's first shot of the season on-goal in the 21st, and Ed Jabbari followed with a pair of shots in the 26th and 27th that required Mines keeper Kyle Daledovich to make saves.
-The Hardrockers managed just one shot in the first half, but a slow start to the second opened up with a shot in the 57th that got Chase Bowman the first save of his Newman career. Defenses were scrambling a bit in the final 25 minutes of regulation, as each side was awarded four corners, but the resulted in just two shots.
-Newman held Mines without a shot in the first overtime period, but the Jets' only shot was nudged just wide by Jonatas Esgolmin off a corner in the 99th. Neither side managed a shot over the final 10 minutes to close out the scoreless draw.
NOTES
-The Jets' first shutout of the season comes in the first game in 2017 after recording five during the 2016 season. Their last was Oct. 22 against Texas A&M International, a 1-0 win, and their last 0-0 tie came against Lubbock Christian on Sept. 17 of last season.
-Bowman only needed to make two saves in his first collegiate match. Newman outshot Mines 8-6, and put six shots on-goal.
