Jets Drop Heartbreaker At No. 16 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Continuing its season-opening shutout streak for over 225 minutes, the Newman men's soccer team found it cut short in heartbreaking fashion, falling to No. 16 Colorado Mesa in double overtime Sunday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

Even though they weathered an imposing offensive attack, the Jets (0-1-1) were just over four minutes away from escaping against the Mavericks (2-0-0) in the second overtime when a well-played restart from the left wing was headed in for the game winner for the hosts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Newman managed to get the first opportunities of the game, picking up a corner in the second minute, then seeing Ed Jabbari get off the first shot of the game in the fifth. Carlos Rubio Garcia added the first shot on-goal in the ninth, getting Mesa keeper Briley Guarneri on the move.

-The hosts got things going quickly from there though, taking six shots over the next 15 minutes, but Newman keeper Chase Bowman kept on his toes. Vitor Okamoto managed a couple shots for the Jets over the final 15 minutes, but neither team scored in the first half.

-Bowman kept the Jets alive in the second half, as Mesa got off 10 shots, including seven on-goal, but the freshman keeper smothered them all, allowing the game to head to overtime.

-The first 10-minute extra session was all Newman, as the Jets kept play in their offensive half nearly the entire period. Rubio Garcia and Fernando Robles each had shots inside the box blocked, and Vince Couto saw his header on a late corner shoot just wide.

NOTES

-After putting up a shutout in his first collegiate game on Friday, Bowman held the No. 16 team in the country scoreless for 105 minutes. He finished with 10 saves on the day.
