AUSTIN, Texas — Looking for its first result of the season in conference play, the Newman men's soccer team stepped up at the right time, tying it late in regulation and closing out a 1-1 draw at No. 11 St. Edward's Saturday afternoon.
KEY SEQUENCE
The Jets (2-6-2, 0-5-1 Heartland) took a blow when their 80-minute shutout came to an end against the Hilltoppers (8-1-1, 5-0-1 Heartland), but they didn't stop pushing. That paid off in the 84th, as Ed Jabbari launched a shot that was blocked, gathered the rebound, and popped off another. That second shot found the back of the net and tied it up with less than seven minutes to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Newman pushed the pace against the No. 11 team in the country in the first half, with Tommy Fiszel ripping off the first shot of the game in the second minute to force a save out of SEU keeper William Tuffin. After the Jets blocked a pair of Hilltopper shots a few minutes later, Fiszel's header on a ball into the box slid just wide.
-A flurry of action in the middle of the period saw the Jets get close to getting on the board. Jamie Barkway's shot in the 19th sailed high, and Newman was called for offsides three minutes later. Tuffin had to come out to stop a Barkway shot in the 24th, and Carlos Rubio Garcia cracked a pair of shots a minute later, but one was blocked and the follow-up saved.
-St. Edward's took control of the chances in the second half, collecting four shots and three corners before Barkway put a shot on goal in the 58th. As the clock ticked under 20 minutes to play, the hosts again rushed the offensive end. The Jets initially held, but Parker Fyfe nodded in a cross to give SEU the lead before Jabbari's clutch finish tied it.
-Newman keeper Chase Bowman came up with a stop to start overtime, while Fiszel and Barkway closed the first 10 minutes with shots. Fernando Robles notched a shot for the Jets in the second extra period, but Newman had to withstand another nine minute of pressure, with St. Edward's putting up four shots before the final horn.
NOTES
-The Jets outshot the Hilltoppers 6-4 in the first half, but the hosts pushed the pace with 11 shots in the second half. The final shot tally was 21-11 in favor of SEU, but each team put just five shots on goal.
-In its last six games against nationally-ranked opponents, Newman holds a win, a draw, and a double-overtime loss.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Jets return home for a four-game homestand, beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico.
