Harvey Sets New Kills Mark As Jets Fall To DBU

DALLAS — Charging back after falling in an early hole for the second straight match, the Newman volleyball team just missed recording another comeback victory, bouncing back to force a fifth set but falling 3-2 to Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon in Heartland Conference action.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (8-10, 2-1 Heartland) took the third and fourth sets to force a deciding fifth game, but the Patriots (6-7, 2-2 Heartland) righted their ship, taking an early 5-2 lead and holding off Newman from getting back into it a number of times. DBU ran off three straight points to make it 9-5 and 14-9 before closing out the 25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 23-25, 15-11 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-DBU opened up an 8-4 lead early in the first after tight early scoring. The Patriots held that lead until the Jets saw Emily Harvey notch three kills during a 5-0 run to tie things at 19-19. The senior tied it again at 20-20 and one more time at 21-all, but the hosts ran off the final four points of the set to grab the lead.

-The Patriots took leads of 7-2 and 10-3 in the second as they held on to momentum built in the first set. Newman responded to get within two, but DBU again bounced out to a big lead, up 19-11 late in the set. The Jets netted 13 of the next 18 points though, capping it with a kill from Kayla Turner and a kill and solo block out of Harvey to make it 24-24, but the Patriots closed it out with two straight points to go up 2-0.

-Needing to win three straight, the Jets got off to a good start in the third, with Harvey going for two kills and Turner and Crystal Powell adding one each to build a 5-2 lead. DBU didn't go easily though, running off five points to retake the lead at 12-10. An 8-1 run from Newman turned that lead right back in its favor, as Yemima Buana put up three kills and Sarah Peterson two, and the guests held on to cut it to 2-1.

-The first 18 points in the fourth kept things close, as DBU held a narrow 10-8 advantage. Newman turned things lopsided quickly from there, ripping off eight straight points, with Harvey and Turner each chipping in a pair of kills to go up 16-10. The Patriots climbed back into it, eventually drawing even at 20-all, but a kill and a block from Buana made it 23-20, and the Jets closed things out to force the final set.

-An early 2-1 lead was the only one Newman held in the fifth. They cut it to a one-point game twice after that, and got as close as 11-9 late, but the Patriots held on to hand the Jets their first conference loss.

NOTES

-Harvey broke the Newman Division II-era record with 27 kills. The senior had just four errors on 58 swings, hitting .397 to pace the Jets.

-Megan Pedersen picked up a triple-double for the third time in five matches. The sophomore set new career-highs with 52 assists and 18 digs to go along with 12 kills.

-Turner put up season-highs with 17 kills and 26 digs, and Anna Burton did the same with 27 digs. In all, five Jets had double-digit kills, and five notched 10-plus digs.

The Jets return home for a busy week, beginning Tuesday with a matchup against Emporia State at Fugate Gymnasium.
