KEARNEY, Neb. — Getting its full lineup on the mat for the first time this season, the Newman wrestling team went 2-1 Saturday at the Midwest Duals, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney.
The Jets (2-2) won 18 bouts, taking six of the 10 weights in all three matches, a narrow 19-18 loss to Colorado Mines, a 24-14 win over Chadron State and a 22-18 victory over Adams State.
Tyler Mies returned to the lineup to go 3-0 including a fall, and was joined by Jacob Stoneberger and Noel Torres, who is ranked No. 10 in the country at 184, in going 3-0. Dalton Weidl, ranked No. 8 at 285, and Kyle Ryan each posted 2-0 marks, while Tyler Lawley went 2-1 with a pin and Thor Balavage won his lone bout of the day.
Newman opened the morning against Colorado Mines (5-0), which is receiving votes in the latest NWCA poll along with the Jets. The Orediggers only won four weights, but earned bonus points in each to narrowly edge the Jets.
Lawley started the match against Chadron State (3-3) with a first-period fall, but the Jets soon went down 11-6. Mies, Ryan, and Torres followed with comfortable wins, followed by a forfeit to Stoneberger to clinch the team's first win of the season.
Capping the day with a matchup against Adams State (0-6), the Jets dropped the first four bouts, but roared back with wins in each of the final six. Mies registered a fall and Nate Panagakis turned in a major decision to send Newman home with a win streak.
The Jets continue their busy January with two duals and a tournament next week, beginning Wednesday with an MIAA matchup at Central Oklahoma.
