ODESSA, Tex. – The Newman University men's soccer team put their road struggles to rest on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13) getting back into the win column with a 3-1 victory over Texas-Permian Basin. The Jets improve to 7-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the Heartland.
The Jets' offense wasted no time capitalizing on an early Falcons defensive miscue in the 8th minute when Victor Rubio Lopez fired a rocket inside the box that was deflected off the keepers' hands finding the wide open foot of Tommy Fiszel. Fiszel netted home his third goal of the year, giving the Jets the 1-0 early advantage.
The Falcons however, headed home the 1-1 equalizer in the 23rd minute off a cross inside the box, beating Jets goalkeeper Jean Claude Consol. Just two minutes and thirteen seconds later, Enzo Nalis free kick found the head of Ed Jabbari netting home his team leading seventh goal putting the Jets back out in front 2-1. The Jets took the 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.
The Jets added an early second half insurance goal in the 50th minute as sophomore forward Ignacio Lerech converted on a penalty kick, giving the Jets a 3-1 lead. The Jets packed it in on defense posting a second half shutout.
The Jets will return home Thursday evening (Oct. 18) as they host #3 Midwestern State. Kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Wilkins Field.
