LAREDO, Tex. – The Newman volleyball team dropped a tough five set match (19-25, 25-20, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-6) on Thursday evening at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. The Jets fall to 1-21 on the year and drop to 0-7 in the Heartland.
The Jets got out to a great start gaining the early momentum taking a 13-10 lead midway through the first set after a Dustdevils handling error. The Dustdevils quickly snatched the momentum back using a 7-1 run taking a 17-14 lead, never looked back taking the first set 25-19.
The Dustdevils started to pull away gaining an early 10-8 advantage in the second set, however the Jets did not go away quietly gaining the momentum back midway through the set taking a 13-10 lead capitalizing off four straight Dustdevils handling errors jolting a 5-0 Jets run. A Hailey Braddy service ace and four more Dustdevils handling errors, put the Jets in full control sparking another 5-0 run taking a 21-16 lead. The Jets would not look back taking the second set 25-20 knotting the match up at 1-1.
The Jets looking to take control of the match in the third set came out flat footed, falling behind 12-9 midway through the set. The Jets responded well with kills from Kennadi Myers, Cassie Pauls along with more poor Dustdevils handling errors sparked a 5-0 run giving the Jets the lead at 15-13. The Dustdevils did not go away quietly knotting the set up at 24-24. Pauls and Sophia Helsing recorded back-to-back monster kills leading the Jets to a third set victory 26-24, giving the Jets a 2-1 match lead.
The Dustdevils started the fourth set on an 8-0 run before an attacking error put the Jets on the board. The Jets were unable to rebound from the dreaded start dropping the fourth set 25-21, setting up a fifth and deciding set.
The Jets took an early 2-1 lead in the third set on 1 of the 11 Yemima Buana kills. The Jets handling got sloppy quickly as the Dustdevils used a 9-0 run taking a 10-2 lead. The Dustdevils never looked back going on to take the fifth and decisive set 15-6.
The Jets wrap up the weekend road trip in San Antonio, TX facing St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. from the Alumni Athletics & Convocation Center.
