SAN ANTONIO, Texas. — The Newman volleyball team suffered another heartbreaking 3-1 loss Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) to St. Mary's The Jets drop to 1-22 on the season and fall to 0-8 in the Heartland.
The Jets started off strong controlling momentum early in the first set taking their biggest lead at 14-9 after a DustDevils attacking error. The DustDevils however fought back taking their first lead at 22-21 going on to take the first set 25-23.
The Jets struggled to get any momentum in the first set as the Rattlers took the opening set 25-7, taking an early 1-0 match lead.
After a rough first set the Jets came out in the second set exchanging blow for blow with the Rattlers. The Jets started to seek momentum after a Kennadi Meyers kill followed up by a Rattlers handling error, cutting the Rattlers lead to 7-5. The Rattlers started pulling away, until senior Hailey Braddy went on a mini 3-1 run of her own recording three of her four kills in the set cutting the Rattlers lead to 16-13. The Rattlers pulled ahead late taking a 2-0 match lead winning the second set 25-19.
Despite being down 2-0 the Jets did not back down, coming out strong in the third set. A Yemima Buana kill and two Braddy kills gave the Jets the early 8-4 advantage sparking a 3-0 run. The Jets fell behind 16-13 after a Rattlers 4-0 run. The Jets did not resist coming back to tie it up at 23-23 after Trinity Conley and Buana kills. The Jets momentum led them to a 26-24 third set victory cutting the Rattlers match lead to 2-1.
The Jets used an early 3-0 run jumping out to an early fourth set lead 9-7 following a Conley kill. The Jets however were unable to keep the momentum as the Rattlers used an 8-1 run taking control of the fourth set going on to win 25-18 taking the match 3-1.
Hailey Braddy and Trinity Conley both recorded double-doubles. Braddy recorded 13 kills adding 12 digs, while Conley through down 13 kills with 10 digs. The Jets hit .156 for the match.
The Jets will return home Thursday evening (Oct. 25) for Pink Night as they host St. Edwards. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Fugate Gym.
