WICHITA, Kan. — The Newman Volleyball team used a strong fifth set to defeat St. Edward's 3-2. The Jets were looking for a strong attack after the Hilltoppers tied up the set. The Jets found a contribution from their whole team, playing as one and getting the five-set victory winning set one 25-19, three 25-17 and five 19-17.
After the Hilltoppers got a kill from Alexa McAndrew cutting the Jet lead to five, but the Jets stayed persistent and kills by Hailey Braddy and Cassie Pauls increased the Newman lead. Yemima Buana began her strong game with a kill to keep the Jets ahead and Jada Key would put the game away with a kill to give the Jets the first set victory.
After the Hilltoppers took the second set, the Jets began the third set strong rallying three straight points on two occasions giving them a strong lead and it would only increase, with kills coming from Yemima Buana, Jada Key, and Cassie Pauls. After the Hilltoppers got a little momentum Newman would rally off four straight points to for the third set victory and the 2-1 lead in the match.
At the beginning of the fifth set both teams looking to gain an advantage early. The excitement gain as the teams would rally points back and forth throughout the set, the Jets would fall late but with the help of their defense would make a strong comeback and get a rally of four points to put them ahead one. The Hilltoppers and Jets would go back and forth at the end of the set, Yemima Buana would cap off her strong game with a kill to tie and Kennadi Meyers would give a very strong showing getting a block and two kills including the set and match-clinching kill to give the Jets a 3-2 victory.
The Jets won Thursday tallying 57 kills, three blocks and a number of blocks on great defensive plays to get the victory late.
Yemima Buana finished with a team-high 16 kills, while Cassie Pauls followed that with 14.
Reagen Roth really helped set up her teammates tallying 50 assists in the Thursday victory.
The Jets return to action Saturday, Oct. 27 as they take on Dallas Baptist as well as Senior Day for three incredible Jets players.
