EMPORIA, KAN – The Newman Jets volleyball team came up short in a non-conference battle Thursday evening against Emporia State falling in three straight sets. The Jets fall to 1-16 on the year, finishing the non-conference portion of the schedule 1-14.
The Jets grabbed the early lead 1-0 after a Yemima Buana kill. The match would stay close at 8-8, before the Hornets would go on a 7-1 run taking commanding control of the first set winning 25-15.
The Jets fell behind early in the second set trailing 5-1, until Yemima Buana and Sophia Helsing recorded two kills apiece sparking a Newman 4-1 run cutting the ESU lead to 6-5. The Hornets used an 8-0 run coasting to a second set victory of 25-12.
The Jets got off to another slow start in the third set falling behind 4-1. The Jets would cut into the Hornets lead on two Hornets handling errors giving the Jets hope trailing 5-4. The Hornets gained the momentum back and would cruise to take the set and match winning 25-16.
- Yemima Buana and Sophia Helsing led the Jets with 9 kills in the match.
The Jets will return to Fugit Gym Thursday night (Oct. 4) hosting their first conference game of the year as they take on St. Mary's with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
